English eyes are smiling?

Some good news, first: those nice people at, erm, NICE (the National Institute for Clinical Excellency) have reversed their position on the sight drug Lucentis. Patients with age-related macular degeneration will now be able to receive the drug from the NHS on diagnosis, rather than having to wait until they are blind in one eye.  read more »

Choice has just published a survey saying that Australian general practitioners are reliant on pharmaceutical reps for much of the information they learn about new treatments, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"Even though only 24 per cent of doctors trusted the information as much as an independent source, most (81 per cent) would rather receive it because it was often the only way to get timely information on new drugs," the SMH reports.  read more »

On JAMA's RFID in Healthcare Study

The Journal of American Medical Association published a study on June 25th, 2008 that landed on my desk like a bomb.  Well, actually, as usual, only the absctract landed on my desk, with big yellow highlighter on the conclusion, which said:

In a controlled nonclinical setting, RFID induced potentially hazardous incidents in medical devices. Implementation of RFID in the critical care environment should require on-site EMI tests and updates of international standards.  read more »
