An Endangering Species

I caught a segment on Hardball a few days ago with a self-described PUMA. This was the first time I've ever heard of the term, but the acronym apparently stands for "Party Unity, My Ass" and is composed of Hillary Clinton supporters who are not planning to vote for Barack Obama in the general election.  read more »

Heart Surgery Via Identify Theft

This is troubling for several reasons.

Authorities say John Parsons, 57, of Oak Park stole the identity of a mentally disabled friend to pay for heart bypass surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago in 2007. Parsons allegedly racked up about $350,000 in medical expenses billed to the friend's Medicaid account.  read more »

Why Chet Edwards Can't Be VP

According to The Houston Chronicle and other sources, Texas Rep. Chet Edwards has been vetted by the Obama campaign and is on Obama's short list. But to borrow a phrase from the McCain campaign, is Chet Edwards ready to lead our party? The answer is an emphatic no.

Taking a break from Veep-a-mania with health care talk

I got to thinking that aside from Gristmill and a lot of what Matthew Yglesias writes, most of the blogs that I follow on regular basis are a little light on informed information about major issues and the commentary on the candidates' policy ideas.  read more »

Medical Marketing

Recently I have been reading "Overdosed America" by John Abramson, which is a very detailed account of the egregious conflict of interest that has infected our health care system. Todays CNN headline, "Don't Become a Victim to Medical Marketing" is a great example of this, and again illustrates not only a need for change in our health care system, but also a need for a more hands on approach to our own health.  read more »

Can a Higher Infant Mortality Rate Be A Good Thing?

You wouldn't think so. The death of a newborn child is a tragedy, and the fact that the United States has a higher infant mortality rate than other developed countries is often cited as a serious failing of America's health care system. But according to Dr. Linda Halderman, the higher U.S. rate is due at least in part to the fact that we try to save the lives of more infants than do other countries:  read more »
