President Johnson and Hill-Burton Act

We are only nine days away from the 100th celebration of the birthday of President Johnson next Wednesday, August 27. During this countdown, I have been monitoring the important events of his life as documented by the LBJ 100th Centennial Celebration. On this day in 1964, President Johnson signed the Hill-Burton Act which provided resources to build hospitals, mental health facilities, medical and dental schools and to support the education of future doctors, nurses and dentists.  read more »

State of the Medical & Pharmaceutical Sales Industries - August 2008

Between a war, hurricanes, global warming and a housing meltdown, there’s no shortage of bad news these days. Class and Contraceptive Choice

Right before the HHS proposal debacle occurred, I wrote a post about how fortunate I was that I could afford to see a gynecologist of my own choosing, even though the health center was not within my insurance network.  In recent weeks, concerns about choice, and who can afford choice, have become much more pressing.  Over the weekend, Amie Newman wrote an excellen  read more »

More than one problem? Make another appointment

So I'm currently rotating through an outpatient medical clinic, and despite all the hand-holding, kumbaya-ing, and "the patient is a person" mentality, beneath the surface an insidious beast lurks. This "beast" is the closely held belief that the patient is only allowed one complaint for each scheduled appointment. You made your appointment to get your blood-pressure meds refilled but you also have seasonal allergy concerns? Too bad, make another appointment so we can discuss the issue on a separate occasion.  read more »
