Conservation: Working on a Way of Life

I have been working on lessening my carbon footprint since I was a teenager, long before there were all the fancy catchwords that included "go green," "eco" this and that, and "carbon footprint." Recycling was the biggest, newest buzz word. As a teenager I had already read about the Gaia Hypothesis so I had a concern for the planet and pollution. Murder, DUI's, and Doctors

According to the New York Times, there were over 16,000 alcohol-related vehicular deaths in 2006. The numbers are shocking and saddening and well, disgusting right? All preventable and yet it continues despite our ever increasing stiffer penalties. Some of the charges these people will face are, vehicular homicide, negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, manslaughter..the list of felonies is long. Thats ok, right? Sure, they deserve it, and they are even pushing the death penalty for repeat offenders.

The new and improved Jeff Merkley?

The last time I had the opportunity to see Oregon House Speaker and US Senate challenger Jeff Merkley speak in person was shortly after he defeated Portland lawyer/activist/smartass Steve Novick in the Democratic Party. Physician Shortage Hits Close to Home

Although home base is Holland (Rotterdam), I wind up traveling stateside frequently for healthcare events.

Between conferences, I normally touch down at the family seat - my mother's home in rural St. Mary's County, MD.

She's been a nurse for 20+ years, and now works in behavioral health. A psych doc she knows has been trying to retire for several years. Each time, a massive, fully-monetized search for a replacement ensues. Each time, the search committee comes up empty.  read more »
